Depending on the source, data shows that between 80-92% of individuals who make New Year’s Resolutions to “get healthier” or to “lose weight” will fail.
You read that right. Fail. They will give up. They will give in. They’ll decided it’s too hard, or they’ll decide that they aren’t seeing any results for their efforts and so, “why bother?”.
Have you been one of those statistics? Clearly you aren’t alone.
Perhaps you have already started your fitness journey- and you’ve made some progress, yet here you are in December, feeling a little down. You are thinking about the high hopes you had in January to really “take things up a notch” and you’re suddenly aware of how far you are from breaking even, letting alone taking things up a notch.
Warning: this next sentence is about to sound like many commercials you’ve seen or heard in the past.
All of the above…..your lack of results in the gym, with your “diet” or “diets” — it’s not all your fault. (Notice I added one word. It’s not ALL your fault. A lot of commercials for ridiculous diet products or gadgets will say “Haven’t lost any weight this year and feeling DOWN?? Guess what?!?! It’s not your fault!!! We’ve got the Miracle Pill that allows you to eat all you want, drink Bloody Mary’s all day, never get out of bad, and get shredded abs!! Just $19.99 for 2 bottles– but wait, there’s MORE!! We’ll throw in a dishwasher too if you…..” — You get the idea. Ridiculous.)
Here’s what is not your fault.
I can speak from my own personal experience that you CAN do all the right things- you can eat a portion controlled diet and work out 4-6x a week including strength training and cardio….and NOT lose weight. In fact, you can do all of this and stay exactly in the same place. And worse yet, you could do all of this and GAIN WEIGHT.

It’s not. Here’s the deal. There is no one size fits all solution for getting in shape. If there was, we’d all look like Gisele and be eating pizza every day and not worrying about it.
The truth is, each one of us has to truly, find OUR fitness. We have to find, through TIME– and trial and error and testing and tweaking- (both our workouts/activity and our diet approach) that magical recipe that makes our body relax and RESPOND.
Consider the following- these are just a few of the things that you, if you have failed in the past or hit a plateau, are likely NOT taking into account. All of these things can affect your fat loss and overall fitness goals:
- Sleep: Too Little or Too Much.
- Travel: Do you travel regularly for work? Different time zones? That’s probably affecting your sleep as well.
- Too much cardio. This is very much a THING. And very common.
- Fear of Fat. Eating fat, that is.
- Avoiding carbs.
- Not knowing how to define “carbs”!!
- Imbalanced Hormones.
- How to determine if you have hormonal imbalances.
- Insulin Resistance.
- Food allergies or intolerances.
- Alcohol consumption.
- Medication- Antibiotics, OTC drugs, prescription drugs etc.
