Growing up in an Italian home, red wine was a staple part of our diet. Whenever we would visit my grandparents, a rich Cabernet Sauvignon was always on the menu, and it remains a fixture on their table to this day. They would always say “it’s healthy,” although they didn’t have much evidence to support their habits. But, it turns out they were right all along. There are actually quite a few health benefits of red wine, and it can provide some surprising nutrients and vitamins!
Of course, moderation is key whenever it comes to alcoholic beverages. If you choose to indulge, only do so as recommended!
It helps you sleep
You may have already noticed this one – drink a glass of wine, immediately want to take a nap (or maybe that’s just me being an old lady). But it’s a real thing, because red wine contains melatonin. Melatonin is a natural hormone that controls your sleep cycles and is sometimes used to treat insomnia.
It can prevent cancer
This is a mighty big claim, but according the American Cancer Society, it just might work. There’s an antioxidant contained in red wine called quercetin which has been shown to have some impressive cancer-fighting effects. It can slow the growth and spread of tumors throughout the body as well.
It helps you live longer
People who drink red wine are 34% more likely to outlive beer or vodka drinkers. Resveratrol is an antioxidant in red wine that protects the heart (oh look, another benefit) and promotes a long life.
It’s good for your skin
Resveratrol isn’t just good for longevity, it can also create gorgeous, glowing skin. One study found that when applied to acne, resveratrol stopped bacteria growth and boosted the effects of benzoyl peroxide, which is in most acne-fighting products.
It keeps your mind young
As you age, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia increases substantially. However, red wine drinkers are far less likely to suffer these brain-related illnesses. It’s resveratrol to the rescue again, with the ability to prevent Alzheimer’s markers and keep your mind fresh.
Let’s raise a glass to these health benefits of red wine! Like I mentioned earlier, moderation is key, and it’s important to stay within the daily limit in order to reap these benefits. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing, so be sure to follow these guidelines!
