How many of you have heard the term “beauty sleep” and thought it was just a cute saying from a movie? You are incorrect. Beauty is improved with optimal sleep and this post, in our continuing series on sleep with our friends at Sleep Number will share some insights on beauty sleep that might surprise you and will likely have you heading to bed an hour earlier tonight.
So how does sleep help us in the beauty department, other than preventing us from having the obvious bags under our eyes from lack of shut-eye?
We’ve talked about what happens when our sleep suffers—on the FitFluential Radio Podcast, particularly in this recent episode (2 part series: PART 1 and PART 2) that provides a deep dive chat with Dr. Lane Sebring on cortisol. When sleep suffers, our body’s production of cortisol is all out of whack. Most specifically the body will product MORE cortisol which leads to inflammation, which in turn affects the skin.
Often, elevated cortisol can result in overly dry skin, acne, and in some cases, allergies or reactions to skin care products or cosmetics. (More often than not, you would not see the correlation between lack of sleep and these symptoms.) For many individuals with pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis, inflammation will trigger those conditions getting worse, or causing a flare-up after things have been fine for a while.
Inflammation is a tricky thing to understand because it can seem so ambiguous. But once you understand that it is your body’s protection mechanism, you will learn to recognize it and appreciate it.
Here’s what Dr. Alina Sholar had to say about Beauty Sleep:
“The term “beauty sleep” isn’t just a fairy tale phrase. You probably already know that puffy eyes are one of the first things we see when we don’t sleep well. But, lack of top-notch sleep can take an even deeper toll on your looks. Your body repairs itself and recovers while you snooze, including building fresh new collagen to prevent skin wrinkling and sagging.
The key is to get enough shut-eye—7 to 9 quality hours each night—and if you’re not, it’s likely affecting your appearance. Even getting 1-2 hours less per night means two times more wrinkles and sagging than if you got 7 or 8 hours per night. So, investing in a great bed is investing in your beauty, too!”

Dr. Alina knows what she’s talking about. Getting enough shut eye and optimal shut-eye is KEY, ladies. Sleeping Beauty—well, come on, there’s really some truth to that fairy tale isn’t there?
Do you feel that you look better as well as feel better after a solid night of sleep? How much sleep are you currently getting? Do you toss and turn all night or wake up with back pain? If so, it might be time to toss that old mattress and invest in the (my words) best bed EVER invented… The Sleep Number bed. You spend over 1/3 of your LIFE in bed, why not make that extremely comfortable and conducive to a fantastic night of sleep? The Sleep Number 360 series has FOOT WARMERS (if you have hypothyroidism and freeing feet you will die at how wonderful this is!!) and the ability to choose your own sleep number for YOUR side of the bed and for your partner’s side of the bed, not to mention the ability to elevate your head, which can also aid in optimal blood flow which makes us look and feel fabulous.
I promise you. You should tell Santa you’ll be good all year if he brings you a Sleep Number bed. Offer to mow your neighbors’ lawn. Offer to bake cookies for the soccer team, even if your kid doesn’t play soccer. Offer to shovel snow for the entire neighborhood. It’s worth it. I promise you.
