Welcome back to our Running for Newbies series sponsored by Superfeet.
Today I’m sharing some insights from Jeff Willinger, one of my dearest “corporate friends” – meaning, someone I met via business—years and years ago, when social media was first becoming a “THING”. I’m talking like 10 years ago friend. Jeff was running Social Media Club Chicago and asked me to speak there and we became fast friends.
Jeff has been running for years and is a RUNNING FANATIC. He’s always been so full of energy and confidence- and that’s something I’ve found is common when interviewing all the runners for this series.
You don’t tend to find many lukewarm runners. Most are even moderate fanatics at a minimum. And not in a bad way.
His tips for new runners:
“Run within yourself and start strong and finish stronger…
I am a big crawl, then walk then, run guy… Get through 1 mile and then 2 miles and 3 miles… Do not expect to boil the ocean all at once… Get past 1 mile and concentrate on the next mile and then the next mile and then the next mile before you know it you’ll be crossing the finish line. Trust me, this works. Metaphor for life as well. Don’t look at how far you have to go in total. Look one step ahead. Conquer the mile in front of you. Conquering that will compel you to conquer the next one.
Begin with the end in mind… Envision yourself crossing that finish line and how good you are going to feel…”
Doesn’t looking at Jeff’s photos alone make you want to run? You don’t see many post- marathon photos with runners looking like they hated life—and yet they just ran 13 or 26+ miles!!! Do you think all those folks thought they could do that when they started running? Nope. They all got there and so can you.
Build your strong foundation by starting small. Each mile you run – you increase your confidence and your energy, both mentally and physically. Your foundation gets stronger with each run, whether it’s a block or a mile.
Just do it.
