So you signed up for a race and you’re ready to run. So exciting! Let’s do this! But wait… First, we’ve got some training to get through.
Maybe you’ve been running for a while and you’re just now ready to take on your first race, or maybe you’re a newbie runner with the goal of crushing a half marathon. Either way, the best way to get through a race of any distance is to train for it! Here’s what to expect.
What To Expect When Training For Your First Race
Expect to spend 6-12 weeks in training.
Depending on your skill and endurance level as a runner, it can take up to 12 weeks (or even more) to build up to your desired distance. If you’re a more accomplished runner training for a marathon and used to running longer distances, you’ll be able to start at a longer threshold than someone just beginning. Either way, make sure you give yourself enough time to progress at a good pace to meet your race distance goal.
Expect to strength train or cross-train about twice a week.
Running alone won’t get you across that finish line. Incorporating strength-training and other cross-training exercises is vital to your health as a runner, and your fitness overall. Having strength training under your belt will better your posture, increase your explosive power, and propel you across that finish line.
Expect to have rest days.
When training for a race, you may think that running every day is a necessity. The opposite is true! Having 1-2 rest days per week will let your muscles repair and greatly aid your progress. Running every day can run you down, and resting will let your body do what it needs to get stronger and faster!
Now that you know what to expect, it’s time to start training. Good luck, and happy running!
