Hello all, I’m Abby the blogger behind www.backatsquarezero.com on a quest to go from fat to FitFluential. Along the way I have picked up marathon running and healthy eating, but still have one main fitness struggle… my sweet tooth! Cakes, ice cream, candies, etc. call to me and it is really hard not to answer. However, on my journey to make healthier choices I have learned that cutting sweets out does not work for me (I’ll have a mental snap and go binge crazy), so instead I focus on moderation and modification. I have discovered there are many ways to make over desserts you love and even found new sweet treats that are much healthier than those I used to devour. I hope that you will enjoy these as much as I do.
FitFluential Five – Healthier Desserts
A half tablespoon of Nestlé’s Chocolate Chips only has 35 calories, measure it out or choose to use just a few. A super simple, satisfying, sweet treat, fresh raspberries with a chocolate chip stuffed in the center of each. (Even works when you have left over mini morsels.)
4. Dark Chocolate Nut Butter Pretzels
These are super satisfying so you only need two or three and because of the nut butter actually contain a bit of protein. To make each treat take two pretzels— I use the Snyder’s snaps because the square shape is easier to work with— place a small dollop of nut butter between them, and lightly press together. Then dip one end in melted dark chocolate (not only does this taste delicious, but it holds the whole creation together) and place the finished product on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet or plate. Place in fridge (freezer if you want them desperately and cannot wait) until chocolate has hardened, eat, and enjoy!
Greek yogurt, fruit, and granola… healthy and filling enough for a great breakfast, but sweet enough for a perfect dessert replacement. Sometimes I get fancy and layer mine in a small glass like you see in the picture, but many times it ends up quickly tossed together in a bowl. No matter what it looks like, parfaits are always fresh and tasty.
2. Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes/Muffins
I take these to every fall and winter pitch-in at work. Everyone always asks for the recipe and is shocked when they hear how healthy it is, each one has right at 150 calories, and that with only 3 ingredients they are beyond easy to make. Look at how simple this is: combine a box of Duncan Hines Spice Cake mix, a can of pumpkin, and 1/2 a cup of unsweetened apple sauce. Make 15 – 16 cupcakes then cook according to the directions on the box (a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake should come out clean when done). These are moist little cakes from heaven and perfect for fall
Check out the recipe for these on my website. They are always extremely popular and the first thing to disappear wherever I take them. Hard to believe that three delicious cheesecake berries ring in at only about 100 calories. Hello beautiful!
What is your favorite healthier dessert? I’d love to hear.
