Welcome Back to our series for new runners, sponsored by our friends at Superfeet. In this series we are sharing quotes from interviews with runners of all kinds; men and women, young and “old”, seasoned and new, marathoners and casual runners (that’s me!) alike. Our goal is to share with you what’s most awesome about running and some tips everyone remembers making a huge impact on their running experience.
One of the mantras over at Superfeet focuses on building a strong foundation, and nothing could be more perfect for runners. The whole experience of running requires a strong foundation—physically and mentally.
What do we mean by that?
If you are not mentally ready for the challenges that will arise when you start running, you’ll give up. Many people do- but we feel strongly that most people give up simply because of things they didn’t know. This is what this series for new runners is all about. We KNOW you’ll hit obstacles in your running journey- we know you’ll get frustrated and confused—that’s the mental climb you will make.
You can do it. Get your mind focused on the belief that you’ve GOT THIS. Get your mind embracing the idea that you CAN RUN. This is that strong mental foundation we’re talking about. Be in the game with your mind AND your body.
Secondly, be sure your physical foundation is strong. You’ll read a lot of tips in this series about ways to ensure you are physically ready to run and then keep running. Pay attention. It’s when you don’t pay attention to building a strong foundation- with your body- that you’ll injure yourself, or fool yourself into thinking you just aren’t cut out for running—don’t do that!!!!
I did that. When I first started running, I got every physical distraction you can imagine from knee problems to breathing issues and cramping…I didn’t have a strong foundation. I didn’t ask for help. I just started. I was guessing.
It didn’t work.
I’ll share my own struggles and lessons and tips in another post but for now, just know this. You can do this. You can be a “runner” in whatever way that looks like for you. Start reading on to learn from many runners sharing many stories and tips for you- and embrace the challenge. You’ll love that you did.
From Allison Olexa in Chicago:
“I love running because nothing can quite top the awesome feeling after a great run. I’m competitive with myself to beat personal bests, which then makes the workout fun.
Running shoes make a difference. Take the time to do your research or go talk to someone in a store to find the best fit, because they can help to prevent injury. Along with stretching, it’s important to remain consistent with foam rolling.”
One of the things you’ll hear from the runners in this series is how running makes them FEEL. Like Allison so many runners become addicted to it because of how they FEEL when they run, when they get faster, when they hit a PR. You’ll see what it feels like too when you find your stride and find your groove. That’s why we want to share real life running tips in this series, so you get all your questions and “what ifs” answered and addressed.
