Running is one of the most common forms of exercise- it’s beginner friendly, it’s free, and you can do it anywhere. And just seems like the natural course of action for any runner, no matter their level, to sign up for a race. Running a race brings out your competitive spirit, provides a benchmark for your training, and gives you the opportunity for some awesome photos as you cross that finish line. Oh, and the sense of accomplishment is pretty great, too.
Especially if you’re new to running, your first race might seem a little daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! Take a few tips from us on running your first 5K and you can cross that finish line with ease.
1. Just Sign Up Already
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never run a mile or you can run 6 miles, just sign up! Having a deadline is a great way to push yourself – you know you have this much time to train, so you better train! Sign up for a race that’s a reasonable amount of time away. Obviously if you’re brand new to running, you don’t want to sign up for a race that’s next weekend. Find a race that’s a few months away and register. Mark that date on your calendar and get to work!
2. Have a Plan
There are so many free resources for runners, and several 5K training plans that you can use. Find one that works for you and go for it. Make time to run and stick to the plan! The plan only works if you do! Many plans for first-time runners will start with walking, and incorporate more running as the weeks progress. Use an app, set a timer on your watch – whatever your style is, there’s a plan for you.
3. Eat According To Your Goals
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking, “I’m running so I can eat whatever I want.” If you want to feel good on your run and perform better, you have to not only train hard but also eat well. Eat foods that will fuel your body, and always remember to hydrate! Hydration is key, and when you’re working up a sweat as you hit the pavement, you want to make sure you’re replenishing your body. Drink plenty of water, and add Mestrength Electrolyte Drink Mix for an extra hydration boost.
Mestrength is a drink mix powder that provides runners with a balanced blend of 5 electrolytes for complete hydration (whereas most sports drinks focus on 2), as well as 5 grams of creatine for muscle recovery, without any of the sugars or high fructose corn syrup typically found in most drinks. This means healthy, hydrated muscles that will propel you towards that finish line. Want to try Mestrength for yourself? Order a 10-Pack on Amazon and use code FFRUNS25 to get 25% off!
4. Get Competitive
Once you get comfortable with the distance, it’s time to go a little faster! Pick up the pace and set a goal for yourself – what do you want your race time to be? Run with someone who’s a little bit faster than you, and it’ll force you to keep up! Think about your upcoming race and focus on how you want to feel when you run. Do you want to feel like you could have done better? Or do you want to feel like you gave it your all?
5. Race At Your Pace
Give it your all – but know that everyone’s “all” is different. It doesn’t matter if you finish first or if you finish last. If you know that you ran with everything you had, that you gave it your all and that you enjoyed yourself – you’ve won. It’s not just about your race time or your placement, it’s about your own personal accomplishment. If it’s your first race, that’s amazing! You ran your first race! And that is an accomplishment in itself.
Finally, after your run don’t forget to replenish your electrolytes with Mestrength! It’s hydration, elevated.
