You know that you should “listen to your body,” but how is that actually done? Your body might be trying to tell you something – here’s how to find out.
Have you ever been in a conversation with someone, you know, one of those conversations where you are talking about something that’s important to you and you just know your friend is not listening? Maybe they’re checking the messages on their phone. Maybe their looking off in the distance at someone walking by. Or maybe they just seem distracted. If that’s ever occurred to you, you know how frustrating it can be.
Have you ever considered that maybe that’s how your body feels? What if your body actually knows what it requires and desires and what if it has been trying to tell you for a very long time? Are you listening?

In school we learn about the systems of our bodies and how they function, but there is very little information out there about having a relationship or a connection with our bodies; one in which our bodies talk and we listen.
Below are 5 things that your body would say to you if you were listening. These are the keys to creating a healthy and happy body:
- Stop judging me.
Your body is always there, contributing to you, taking care of you, making sure you get where you need to go and often times our response is judgment of how bad and wrong it is and the choice to ignore it completely. When you wake up in the morning, make a conscious choice to stop the litany of judgment that you so often begin each day with. Instead, thank your body and tell it how grateful you are for it.
There are so many things that are body does for us every single day. The smell of coffee in the morning. The warmth of the sun on our skin. The feeling of the water that surrounds us when we swim. The gentle, cool breeze on a warm day. Thank your body for these gifts. Gratitude is the antidote for judgment so when you choose gratitude, judgment goes away.
- Ask me questions.
Rather than assuming you know what your body desires, ask… about everything. “Body, what would you like to wear? Body what would you like to eat?” When you ask a question, something will stand out, whether it’s a particular outfit or a particular item on the menu, go with that.
Asking your body about everything that concerns it is extremely simple, but it’s as dynamic a change as learning a brand new language. It’s learning your body’s language.
You ask a question with words. Your body responds with energy. As you continue to ask, you begin to know the language of your body and what it’s saying becomes clear.
- Let me move.
Bodies like to move. What movement is fun for your body? Is it Pilates or Yoga or perhaps running or push-ups? Whatever type of movement is fun for you and your body, do that, every day, even if only for a little while.
- Ask me what it would take to get me to look the way you want me to.
If you want your body to look a certain way, first acknowledge the greatness of it as it is and then ask what it would take to shift some things and create some change. Your body is happy to comply. It will let you know what it would take. Ask and take time to listen.
- I was created to have fun.
What if the sole purpose of life was to have fun? Would that change the way you do things? If you’ve ever been around kids, you know that they love to play. They move around all the time. Everything they do is about playing and having fun. What else is there? What if you could have some of that? Would you be willing to live life as a celebration? Would you be willing to start having tons of fun?
If you haven’t been listening to your body, it’s never too late to start! As you ask your body questions about everything that concerns it, as you choose gratitude for your body and the amazing gift that it is, you develop a relationship of kindness, caring and nurturing that will dynamically contribute to your health, your well-being and the overall quality of your life.
