Do you have the New Year’s Resolution Blues About Your Body?
We feel you. You aren’t alone, you know that right? Read on. This is part 2 of our 2-part series with our friends at Nanohydr8, where we explain how to naturally increase your ENERGY so you can slay your training. Because, here’s the thing. Everyone says “Oh I just can’t get motivated to work out!”. WRONG. We call BS on that one. It’s not that you aren’t motivated, it’s more that you don’t have any energy. It’s not natural to want to go hit the treadmill or the weights when you feel like the couch is CALLING to you and a nice cold beer sounds better than a glass of water and a sweatfest. We get that. So- how do we get our energy BACK? Read on.
Today we are going over the last 3 tips on how to naturally increase your energy- and keep it UP.
- Supplement appropriately and consistently.
- Decrease Stress. Don’t Obsess.
- Practice Self-Care.
Per the title of this post, you might be reflecting this time of year on all the goals you set for yourself – in the area of getting fit and healthy – in January of 2018. If you are like many people, you are looking at your reflection in the mirror or maybe at the weight on your scale and wondering what happened? What happened to my dedication, to my determination?
Are you looking back at your efforts to get fitter last year and realizing you are sorely lacking?
Or, are you looking back at your efforts and feeling frustrated because – you think that you should have better results based on all that you HAVE DONE?
You’re probably feeling mentally and physically depleted either way. Am I right? Well keep reading on, because this is part 2 of our mini-series on improving energy so you can improve your gains!
If you are in the first group—this is more a motivation and accountability thing, and don’t worry. We’ve got you covered with some great posts on that coming up. Be sure you are subscribed here so you don’t miss a thing coming up this year!
For those of you in the latter group- the ones who feel that you have worked out and eaten well yet you aren’t seeing the fat loss or muscle gain or both that you feel you SHOULD HAVE, then it’s time to re-evaluate your actions. If you are at a plateau- there may be some “bigger picture” habits you are missing that could over time, make up all the difference.
In our last post we talked about how these top 6 practices could dramatically improve your results over time—and MANY PEOPLE are not focusing heavily enough on these “bigger picture” areas. DON’T KID YOURSELF, THESE ARE IMPORTANT AND THEY ADD UP! TRUST ME!
The top 6 practices to increase energy and keep it UP continually.
- Focus on SLEEP. First and foremost.
- Eat enough.
- Train hard but focus on QUALITY not just quantity. Avoid overtraining.
- Supplement appropriately and consistently.
- Decrease Stress. Don’t Obsess.
- Practice Self-Care.
Last week we covered the top 3 tips. Today we’ll cover the last 3.
SUPPLEMENT APPROPRIATELY AND CONSISTENTLY.
Supplements are just that: products you can take on a daily basis that SUPPLEMENT your diet and exercise. Far too often, people view SUPPLEMENTS as one of two extremes. They either think supplements are supposed to be the penultimate solution in a bottle to EVERYTHING (as in, if I take this fat burner pill, I can lose 10lbs by my Office Christmas Party. NOT) OR—they take the opposite opinion and believe that all supplements and vitamins and pre-workouts are all snake oil and a waste of money.
Neither is true.
As someone who never used to take vitamins or supplements of any kind, and now does take a LOT of vitamins and supplements on the daily- guided by my trainer, my dietitian and my doctor, I can tell you from personal experience. They work. They help. They assist. They do not solve problems on their own, nor do they solve overnight. They also do not work without the user making other lifestyle changes. In other words you can’t take a fat burner and just keep overeating and think this “carb burner” will magically evaporate those chips and fries you ate. You gotta do the work.
I’ve made some BIG changes this year to address my health issues and I’m taking a LOT of high quality supplements and I can tell you without question they are turning around my issues.
RESEARCH YOUR SUPPLEMENTS. Invest in high quality ingredients and reputable companies.
Of course we’ll insert a heavy plug for a supplement here *ahem*– yes, it’s Nanohydr8.
Nanohydr8 is a caffeine-free, calorie free performance drink.
“GO BEYOND HYDRATION WITH OUR PROPRIETARY DRINK FORMULATION. I’m taking Nanohydr8 and so is my manfriend. And it is helping me have far more energy during my workouts and it has increased my performance. You’ll hear from a lot of our FitFluential influencers in upcoming posts about how this is helping THEM in their fitness journey.
But- kids, think about this. I take Nanohydr8 to SUPPLEMENT my training and my nutrition. Taking this product doesn’t give me the excuse to eat like crap. It doesn’t give me a hall pass to not sleep and drink to excess in the holiday season. If you are going to supplement—take it seriously and don’t contradict what the supplement is trying to do by not addressing all the other areas of your life.
DECREASE STRESS. DON’T OBSESS.
Stress is one of the most potent destroyers of health. And it can DRAMATICALLY affect our results in the gym. We are all stressed and it’s not truly possible to lead a “stress free” life. But we can decrease the effects of stress by changing how we manage stress. This is a process….no doubt. It’s not like you can overnight just become this calm Zen ninja. But, if you evaluate your life and see that you have a massive amount of stress – financial, job-related, marriage and/or kids related, fitness related— you might be dealing with a LOT of worry and fear and anxiety. This takes a toll on our health—on our sleep, on our energy, on our motivation, and it’s doing a number underneath your skin- on your gut, on your brain, on your hormones.
Start incorporating regular meditation practice– and if you have never done it, do not think it’s only for hippies. Some of the most successful CEO’s and revolutionary business founders and their employees practice daily meditation and swear that it keeps them grounded. Try an app like CALM or HEADSPACE.
These are the meditation accessories I use at my home and I meditate every morning after I have some reading time and coffee time.
I bought some of these Intention Candles in Naples FL and now buy them on the regular. As you light them, you see the title of the candle and the mantra that goes with it. This forces you to focus on what you want to attract in your life. You can buy here on Amazon.com.
When you get yourself some good meditation pillows (and guess what you can likely use these for yoga poses assists at home as well!), you’ll enjoy your meditation practice even more. The ones featured above are what I use and love how it makes sitting u very straight totally natural and comfortable. CLICK HERE to buy on Amazon.
We’ll be posting a LOT coming up here on how to decrease stress and anxiety but I urge you to start with something simple like daily meditation. It will change you for the better, I promise.
I urge you to start doing some research on how you can change the way stress affects you. In fact our next tip is an important next step on just that.
Most of us put ourselves last. It’s time to make ourselves a priority. If you don’t take care of YOU first, you will be unable to take care of everything in your life needing your attention. If you spend all of your energy taking care of your boss, you colleagues, your friends, your significant other, your kids, and then put YOU last—guess who gets the least energy? Guess who suffers the most?
It’s not selfish to practice self-care. Think about an Olympic athlete and a coach. The coach works with the athlete day in and day out to ensure they are getting enough rest, not putting their body at risk by staying out partying and drinking, not engaging in physical activity that could injure them, taking saunas or hot baths with Epsom salts to ease muscle pain etc. The coach watches what the athlete eats and watches the athlete as they train- if they see the athlete faltering, they step in and assess what’s wrong.
This is what you need to do WITH YOURSELF. Treat yourself as if you were your own coach. Do you see that you need rest? Do you see that a hot bath with Epsom Salts and Candles and Essential Oils could really help you wind down? Could you benefit from shutting down your computer and tuning into a good chick flick?
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF as if your body was a temple and you needed to preserve that temple –because it is. You are worth it. It’s time to start believing you are worth it and start acting that way.
- Get a massage.
- Take a new class on a hobby you love.
- Go for a walk! Simple but effective. It’s time away, it’s fresh air, and it’s exercise.
- Go see a movie, alone. Try it. You’ll become a fan, trust me. I was scared to go alone and once I did, I realized what a guilty pleasure it was.
- Treat yourself to a facial or even that elective cosmetic treatment you’ve been wanting to do but putting off. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel.
- Get your hair done at an amazing salon. Heck- kill two birds with one stone or even three– I go to Milk and Honey spas here in Austin– for my hair, my brow waxes, my massages and more. They’ve got it all in one place and it’s DREAMY. Find yourself a place like this, and if you live in Austin, head to Milk and Honey. You’re welcome.
The more you take care of yourself, the better you will feel and function. When you feel better and can function optimally, you will be a better mom or dad, a better employee or boss, and a better friend. When you feel better and can function optimally, how do you think that will affect your fitness results?
Yea. I thought you’d figure that one out.
What areas in this post can YOU relate to? Have you been putting yourself last? Have you been avoiding supplements because you were too skeptical? Are you a stress monster? Is it time to change all of these problems? We think so.
