Welcome Back Runners! This is another installment of our Running Series for Newbies, sponsored by our friends at Superfeet! Today we are hearing from a dear friend of mine, Leticia Barr, who has blossomed into an outstanding runner!
“When I started training for my first half marathon three years ago, to say I was intimidated was an understatement. I had chosen to run the St. Jude Memphis Marathon as a St. Jude Hero and knowing that I was committing to run a race for charity made me stick to my training plan because my fundraising, training, and running was in support of St. Jude’s mission that families whose children are being treated for cancer never pay for treatment, food, and housing so they can focus on what matters- helping their child live.
I had never run anything longer than a 5K before and didn’t consider myself a runner. I knew to give myself plenty of time to train so purchased a Polar watch soon after I signed up to run St. Jude Memphis and the free online Polar Flow training program helped me plot my training plan for my very first half marathon. I plugged in my age, fitness level, and race date and it provided me with a training plan to follow from the first day of training until race day.
I also made the investment to get fitted for a pair of running shoes at a local running store. They helped me find the best shoes to fit my feet and stride. Later when I developed plantar fasciitis, I went back to them for advice and ended up purchasing insoles that made the symptoms go away and have made all the difference in the world.
This December I’ll be running my 4th race as a St. Jude Hero. I still use the same Polar watch I bought for my first race although I’m on my third pair of running shoes. I’ve stuck with the same model but just have replaced them and the insoles each year.
Don’t be intimidated by the distance you’ve committed to, the overwhelming selection of gear, or training. If I can run a half marathon as a non-runner, you can too! By the way, I still don’t consider myself a runner!”

Leticia is a dear friend of mine and I still remember when she decided to start running. It was out of the blue. And she reached out to me asking about the right Polar Heart Rate Monitors…and shoes, and socks etc. But she didn’t need me really- she was fearless in attacking her training.
You know what I see as keys to Leticia’s success—and why she excelled in running and why she’s still doing it and LOVING IT??
She started it for a cause—now this doesn’t mean we all have to start running for a cause, but for her, the cause with St. Jude’s Hospital MOVED HER. She was led by the dedication to the cause.
And you have read above how she made the choice to build a strong foundation as she started. She got GOOD SHOES and insoles—and invested in a heart rate monitor—which I think can be great to make your training fun- you will observe how much healthier your heart gets as you train. It’s cool.
I have watched Leticia come alive with adding running to her life. She’s always been so full of life and energy but she has that thing that so many runners get after they really begin enjoying it….it’s this pride and empowerment that radiates outside of the person. You can almost feel it, it’s so tangible. This is why runners are so passionate about getting others to run. When you run, whether it’s 5ks or just running for 10 minutes a day in your neighborhood or even doing marathons—running makes you feel so much more ALIVE and so CAPABLE—when you conquer running, after perhaps years of thinking you couldn’t be a “runner”—you just know inside you can do anything.
