Do you love to look fantastic? Do you put a lot of time into your hair looking oh so fly, and to your contouring ranking with the best of the Kardashians? Do you shop for the best out-of-the-gym clothes and shoes for your nights on the town?
If so, you aren’t alone. We polled our FitFluential community recently and discovered that more than 92% of them found that after losing weight and getting in better shape, they wanted to spend more time and money on how they LOOKED. It makes sense, and why not?
However, in this same poll, nearly 75% of the ladies indicated that although they were spending more money on cosmetics, hair products, fashion apparel and shoes, they had no skincare routine.
75% of the ladies polled said that while they might wash their faces to remove makeup, they had no idea about skincare and felt confused by all the different brands and products and even procedures one could partake in, all in the name of better skin.
Well, ladies, we are here to help you. One of the primary reasons we began to create this FitFluential Beauty hub on FitFluential.com is that so many of us ARE spending more time and money on our appearance—probably due to increased confidence after achieving success in the gym. We strongly support that, because it’s our feeling that taking care of yourself and how you look illustrates a level of self-respect and self-love.
Take pride in your unique beauty and own your look! We support you, girl, and we’ll be sharing a whole lot of GOOD STUFF here in the FitFluential Beauty section on cosmetics, skincare, haircare, and more. We’re here to help you get your inner Beyonce ON.
Today, let’s start with this skincare situation.
Ladies. You HAVE TO TAKE YOUR SKINCARE SERIOUSLY.
And let’s be straight. Skincare is not just about keeping your skin looking and feeling its best. Your skin is an organ, in fact, it’s the largest organ in the human body, considering it envelops us entirely.
Your skin is the single largest barrier to infection. Our skin contains thousands of nerve endings that serve as an alarm system if we near things too hot or cold. The skin works as a warning system as well for what’s going on underneath the skin. Sometimes, for example, if you eat something that you are allergic to, you’ll get a rash. I’ve often ended up with hives when very stressed. If your skin turns a yellow tint (I had this when I had mono in my 20’s—my liver was damaged) it means issues with your liver. Our skin sweats- we know that from the gym. Sweating is a crucial function that actually cools the body down.
Are we understanding the big picture?? Taking care of your skin is not just about beauty- it’s about health and wellbeing.
So—what’s a girl to do when she doesn’t have any idea how to start getting a good skincare routine going?
In today’s post, we are going to focus on the very basics, and in the posts to follow, we’ll expand and grow your skincare routine with what’s appropriate for your age, stress levels, medications, skin conditions and hormone situation.
Let me insert here a hugely biased introduction to Glowbiotics, the sponsor of this post. I discovered this product line via my Botox lady, Dr. Alina Sholar. Dr. Sholar schooled me on skincare and got me understanding the difference between over the counter skincare you can buy for $10 and this medical grade probiotic skincare for the skin. I purchased a gift package and was hooked. I mean, truly, my skin has NEVER EVER looked better. People ask me all the time about what I’m using because my skin (wait for it….) GLOWS even with no makeup. I am 49 years old and feel better about my skin every week.
I literally stalked the marketing team at Glowbiotics to beg them to work together, because I was so impressed with the products AND wanted to educate on skincare here on FitFluential. So here we are, and they are AMAZING!! I AM IN LOVE with their products and I promise you—once you get yourself some, you will be amazed at how much you too will glow and feel better and better about how you look,
If you are using regular soap to wash your face, shame on you girl! That ain’t right. As our friends at Glowbiotics share, “Traditional soaps strip the barrier of the skin facilitating the need for a toner to rebalance the skin. Both GLOWBIOTICS MD probiotic face washes have a unique sulfate and paraben free formulations that remove all surface impurities including dirt, make-up, excess oil and environment toxins.”
You need to wash your face, ideally 2x a day. Once in the morning after you wake up and once at night- especially at night- to remove your makeup and clean your skin. Do NOT go to bed with your makeup on!! Fast track to skin problems right there!

What’s this product all about? I asked our besties at Glowbiotics to explain:
Using this one-of-a-kind balancing formula not only gives you a nice dose of your daily probiotics and antioxidant protection, but also gently exfoliates, helps with cell turnover, smooths pore size, lightens red and brown unwanted pigment, brightens natural skin tones and helps with oil control.
- Brightens and lightens all skin types
- pH balanced
- Effective treatment for ingrown hairs
- Ideal for all but very sensitive skin types
- Use the solution at least 2 times a week if sensitive, otherwise solution may be used more often if well tolerated
- AM or PM– Apply solution to a cotton round. Gently swipe the cotton round all over your face and neck after cleansing in the AM or PM.
I personally use this product and love it: click here.
I read a book several years ago written by a dermatologist about the importance of exfoliation for skin and not just on the face. He said that every woman should focus on exfoliation- (in my words) brushing off the layers of dead skin and revealing fresh new skin underneath. That said, many times, women can go overboard and go a bit nutty on the exfoliation. For people that have sensitive skin exfoliating their skin too much creates more irritation so they need to use treatment products that are gentle enough for their skin but don’t cause inflammation or irritation. Remember, we are looking to improve our skin, not make it worse.
If you are serious about changing your skin using an AM and PM treatment product is essential. The two I would recommend are the Vitamin C treatment during the day because you get the essential antioxidants to fight against free radical damage that comes from everyday living and being outside. During the night, a retinol is imperative for anti-aging, pigmentation and overall skin health. The beauty of GLOWBIOTICS is we have 3 to choose from. For beginners just starting on retinol, our friends at Glowbiotics suggested starting with the Retinol Anti-Aging + Brightening Treatment then working your way up to the MD retinols. The I can do it all treatment is the Ultimate Youth Restoring Serum because it has 3 different targeted benefits included with the retinol.

HINT: LADIES— exfoliate your body in the bath or shower. There are amazing products offering exfoliation for the body and trust me, you skin will be sooooo soft it’s crazy!!
This seems to be what every woman knows she should use but many avoid- and often they avoid it because of acne issues. Yes, acne can plague us as adults and usually is tied to hormonal issues. We’ll address that in future posts so stay tuned.
As you get older, you will notice your skin gets a more “dull” look to it. I personally did not start taking care of my skin until my late 30’s, probably around age 37 or so. And by then, my overly sunned skin was begging for moisturization. And – can we just insert here how much your skin will benefit if you HYDRATE YOUR BODY WITH WATER?? Ladies focus on drinking as much water as you can- it will moisturize your skin from the inside out. (my words, not scientifically stated)
“GLOWBIOTICS introduces the first complete range of probiotic moisturizers to address different skin needs and concerns. Proper hydration is an essential element for healthier, younger looking skin and finding the correct hydrator for your skin type can sometimes be a challenge. By literally tricking the skin into a repair mode, each GLOWBIOTICS probiotic hydrator taps into the skin’s immune system and enhances the skin’s function with anti-inflammatory benefits, skin renewing capabilities and self-generating functions that increases key proteins like collagen and elastin. The clean aspect of the line means each paraben, sulfate and phthalate free probiotic hydrator provides efficacious options for health challenged individuals or anyone who desires a line free of toxic ingredients.”
I just did an interview with a top plastic surgeon in Denver for the FitFluential Radio Podcast and he shared the very same suggestions we are sharing in this post (stay tuned for when his episode airs in the coming weeks!) He said he recommends a foundation to all patients of a moisturizer and SPF (see next bullet)- and that the generation of collagen and elastin is key to assist in anti-aging.
Are you using a moisturizer yet? I put it on hard core at night AND during the day. I used to think I had to avoid moisturizer because my skin has always been acne prone but not so. Here’s something to consider if you’ve felt the same way in the past:acne prone skin that doesn’t get proper moisture will actually create more oil because the skin gets too dry and so the skin needs moisture. Oil creates the opportunity for acne so use a lightweight moisturizer will have long term benefits.
When I wake up, SERIOUSLY, my skin is CRAVING my Glowbiotics routine – and after I apply my gels and creams, I am (wait for it) glowing, Follow me on Instagram and you’ll see my non-filtered posts, I feel darn awesome about my skin at age 49 and I owe so much to Glowbiotics.
It feels damn great to face my next birthday, for 50, and feel better about how I look than I did at 30. Truth.

Here are some of my biggest obsessions:
I put this on first thing in the morning and follow it with the brightening cream below. (Click on the picture to purchase or learn more at Glowbiotics.com)
This is like coffee for my skin each morning.
Every dermatologist I have met with and interviewed for our podcast recently has reinforced the importance of wearing a good sunscreen every day. “Sunscreen is an essential part of maintaining healthy skin and preventing long term damage to include the visible signs of aging, dryness, skin discolorations, photodamage as well as skin cancer.” Says the Glowbiotics website.
If you are buying drugstore brand SPF that tells you to reapply every hour, it’s because they are chemically compounded and the products actually break down once they are applied on your skin. So- just applying in the morning is not enough. My recommendation is to level up and get the quality skincare and quality SPF like those that my besties at Glowbiotics offer.
