45% of Americans set resolutions for the new year— the majority of which are fitness and health related.
92% of those resolutions fail. More than a third never make it past the first month!
How can you set yourself up for success when it comes to your goals and resolutions? An often overlooked essential element is a strong support system. Often, we’ll keep our goals to ourselves out of fear of ridicule or failure; without external motivation, we lose momentum. This makes it so much easier to give up later.
Don’t go it alone! Allowing others to share and support you in your journey towards your fitness and health goals makes you more accountable, and offers motivation (sometimes in the form of a little healthy competition). Ask for support from your family, reach out to an online community, find yourself a workout partner, make new friends at the gym.
And if you’re looking to improve your overall health and performance, consider finding a health coach to guide and support you . A certified coach can usually offer more motivation and accountability than your friends and family can and apply their knowledge to tailor a regimen that’s right for your specific needs and goals.
Up until now there’s been two main challenges to working with a health coach: finding a high quality coach and price. An experienced, certified coach can cost hundreds of dollars a month. A new health coaching service by GOQii has changed the game, delivering daily 1 on 1 coaching at a fraction of the price.
GOQii integrates certified health coaches with the GOQii Band activity tracker and app, which measures and tracks sleep, activities, nutrition and ‘Karma Points’ (converts daily goal achievement into monetary donations for global causes). GOQii coaches look at the big picture of your health, analyzing your data collected by the GOQii Band and App to help you make sustainable, permanent lifestyle changes to achieve your goals.
Users are inspired to maintain proper nutrition, activity levels and exercise, while monitoring sleep and health habit changes. They can then check in with their coaches via unlimited daily text messages and scheduled video chat sessions for real, one-on-one motivation and accountability.
The U.S. Beta trial will launch in February; 500 participants will be selected to join and receive 12 months of personalized health coaching to help them with their goal setting, habit changes, accountability and motivation for a more holistic outlook to their overall health. Interested? You can apply to join the Beta at GOQii.com. The exclusive price for the 12 month Beta is $99 (no payment required to apply). If selected, you’ll be asked to provide regular feedback on the product as you use it.
Just how important is a support system, and how can we get the most out of personal coaching? We asked GOQii health coach Elaine Williams some questions to help steer us towards success.
1) How important is a support system for fitness and health goals? Why?
Most people make new year health and fitness resolutions every year, are off track in a few weeks and then soon give up. What these goals lack is a structured support system that can help inspire and motivate you and get you back on track when you slip or start to give up. Also, there is so much information out there, so much, that confuses people and can be dangerous if someone decides to follow information that may be inaccurate. A good support system is one that can help filter and prioritize this information and supports the individual with the goal with a structure and constant motivation, information and encouragement. This is why people who work with professional health and fitness coaches are more successful at achieving and maintaining their goals.
2) With all the different type of health and fitness coaches out there, how you can find the right fit?
Looking at the coach’s education, experience and specialties is the first step to determine if they are the right fit for you. Once you narrow down potential coaches you should make sure they should have strong listening and communication skills along with empathy and compassion. They can use all of these dimensions to understand your unique lifestyle situation, what motivates you and help you set goals and new habits that will work for you.
3) What can we do to make a coaching dynamic more successful?
While having a coach is one of the best ways to reach your goals, they can’t do the work for you, but they will be able to support, guide and motivate you to keep you on track. One of the most important thing you can do to ensure success is to communicate regularly with your coach about your daily activities and being honest about what is working and what is not working for you.
4) How important is health and fitness tracking to reaching our goals?
Fitness tracking alone will not get you to reach your health goals. With all the fitness and activity trackers now on the market, people are still putting their devices in the sock drawer after a few months. The main reason is that engagement drops after you gain the awareness of how your activities will be measured. But it is important to focus on why you are tracking your activities. The key is to keep it simple and only focus on the metrics that relate to a specific goal you are working on now. A coach can help you interpret the most important data and how to use it for reaching your specific goals.
