Welcome back to our series on Running For Newbies- sponsored by our friends at Superfeet. Today, we are talking with Heather Montgomery, one of our earliest FitFluential Ambassadors, and a woman who runs marathons and half marathons like most of us walk to the mailbox.
Seriously. She knows running!!!
We asked Heather, “Why did you start running?”
I started running as a way to stay active and healthy after college. Team sports are so much harder to play as adults so I thought running was a good alternative.
It’s funny to learn how many runners “fell into running” more than making a specific choice. We’ve talked to so many runners over the years and many have stories like this, where they started running for one reason, and it became a passion very quickly that changed their lives completely.
“What kept you going when you got frustrated early on?” was our next question.
Heather answered: My blog honestly! I started it as an accountability journal when I was training for my first half marathon, so I knew once I put it out in the world, I had to keep going!
The truth is, the founder of FitFluential starting blogging for the same reason: accountability! We encourage you to embrace social media and think about starting a blog– you’ll connect with so many other runners and you might surprise yourself with how great you are at this creative outlet. You can learn from other bloggers and find out about a ton of fun events all over the country and probably some in your own local area!
“Why does running give you joy- why do you keep doing it?”
I have met so many amazing people through running and have gotten to run all over the country. Going to races and expos and hanging out with like minded people is my favorite. My husband also runs with me so it’s a great thing for us to do as a couple, and I love that we are being good healthy role models for our daughter, who has also run two races already at age 4!
We talked about how running with your significant other and/or your family can be such a wonderful bonus—and the more you dive into the running community, the more you will see that this is very common. You’ll see couples running together and families- and we think it’s a fantastic way to further solidify a strong foundation of togetherness in the relationships. It’s also providing, when it comes to your kids, a fantastic foundation for them for a healthy lifestyle. You aren’t just preaching to them to be healthy, you are all actively participating.
We hope you are seeing a common thread in this series on running as well. Runners – don’t they all seem to be just REALLY HAPPY? TRULY. I have never met a runner who doesn’t just LOVE TO RUN. Even me, when I have had times I was grounded from running, either for injury or health issues- I MISSED RUNNING. I love to run and am so glad I’m back at it. I feel so much more powerful and capable and strong when I’m regularly running.
Well. What do you think? Are you ready to get your run on?
