When many people think of stretching, they think of long, static holds that feel reeeaaally, really good after a long run. These definitely have their place, but it’s not when you’re getting primed for a run! Before you run, we want to hit some dynamic stretches that open up the muscles, get your body nice and warm, and get you ready to #RockYourHealth with an awesome run ahead.
Why do you need to warm up?
Warming up before exercise is always necessary. Even if you’re just going for a light, leisurely jog, a proper warm up can be extremely beneficial. By loosening up your muscles and promoting blood flow, you’re telling your body, “get ready, because we’re about to do some work.” On the other hand, if you just go out and begin to run, your body isn’t expecting that and your muscles are more prone to injury. Taking even 5 minutes to warm up not only makes you a smarter runner, but it can also make you a faster runner!
Some of our favorite warm up stretches for runners include butt kicks, walking lunges, and leg swings. Check out the video below for more stretches and full demonstrations from Jared at Tone and Tighten!
So, let’s get ready to run! Be sure to use these stretches to warm up and you’ll notice a huge difference in your run. Take care of your muscles and they’ll love you back. At a race, sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget your warm up, but these stretches can be done anywhere, any time.
