St. Patrick’s Day has passed, but you know what hasn’t? My craving for a Shamrock Shake.
I know, so healthy of me.
These seasonal treats always get me. Knowing that it’s only around for a limited time makes me NEED to have it. It’s unreasonable, I know, but I can’t help it. The flavors are just so fitting for that time of year, and when it comes to Spring, nothing satisfies like a Shamrock Shake.
So, what makes up a traditional Shamrock Shake? No less than 33 ingredients. Most of which don’t exactly make it on to our Clean Eating Shopping List. A small comes in at 530 calories, with 86 grams of carbohydrates (73 of which come from sugar). So… no. A Shamrock Shake isn’t healthy. But…. you can make your own with only 5 ingredients, all of which fit into a healthy diet.

The calorie count on this delicious copycat shake is only 158 calories, with a healthy serving of protein and greens. There are only 4 grams of carbohydrates total, 3 of which come from fiber! What a stark difference from the Shamrock Shake you can get at the drive-thru. No artificial colors here, all that green is from a big handful of spinach.
The most important ingredient here is peppermint extract. Extracts are amazing. You can create any flavor with just a few drops – keyword here being “few.” Too much peppermint extract and it overwhelms, but with just the right amount you can make this shake the perfect minty taste. Add more or less depending on your taste! Another ingredient here that I love adding to smoothies is Xanthan Gum. This is another ingredient where a little bit goes a long way. The reason I love it? It creates a thicker, milkshake texture in any smoothie. I used to not like smoothies because I thought they were too “icy.” Xanthan Gum changed all that.
All that to say: For one-third of the calories, you can create a copycat Shamrock Shake right at home. This healthy Shamrock Shake recipe is almost too simple, with only 5 ingredients. Enjoy it during springtime or anytime for a minty treat!
