My name is Karen Poole and I am a health and fitness enthusiast. I am an Athleta Sponsored Athlete, high school basketball coach, and Nike Women’s Marathon Ambassador. After I graduated college and ended my basketball career, I found a love for long distance running and lead two running groups every week. I have been featured in Tennis View magazine and am currently studying to become a personal trainer and turn my love for fitness into a career. I have completed two marathons, am a 1st degree blackbelt in taekwondo, and am planning on tackling my first triathlon this fall.

How do you define FitFluential?
I first noticed the #FitFluential hash tag on Twitter and wanted to learn more. After discovering other fitness enthusiasts like myself and following them I realized there were many more people like me on a constant journey to improve their fitness and influence others to join the movement. FitFluential is a community that motivates and inspires others daily, it is a wealth of fitness information in a constantly evolving industry and I am so thankful for the people I have met through FitFluential. I am looking forward to being a part of this wonderful community.
What is your main motivation to be fit?
I have always been active. I played team sports in high school, basketball in college and now am focusing on tennis and long distance running. I have always been motivated to stay fit because of how I feel when I am treating my mind and body right. I have gone through phases of poor eating and little exercise and I do not like how that makes me feel. I have made a promise to myself to stay fit to be the best person I can be. I enjoy sharing fitness with others and staying fit myself is a great motivator.
FitFluential believes the keys to balance are Eat, Sleep, Move and Enjoy. What is your favorite way to enjoy life?
My favorite way to enjoy life is to be active and get outside. I love heading out in the morning and running through nature. Some of my best moments are when I am running, it is a time that I can think about life and relax. Yoga is also a big part of maintaining balance in my life. Sometimes a deep stretch and time on my mat gives me time to reset. Food is also important to me, I enjoy eating healthy and one of my favorite meals is quinoa, vegetables, and some delicious dark chocolate for dessert!
What is your regular fitness routine?
I work out 6 days a week. I usually run 3-4 times a week, cross train with weight lifting 2 days a week, and do 3-4 workouts on the Nike Training Club App for my iPhone. I also try to mix in a tennis match or two each week. I’m always interested in trying new workouts and am addicted to the fitness deals on Groupon. About once a month I try a new class such as crossfit, aerial yoga, and kickboxing.
What advice do you have for someone at the beginning of their fitness journey?
Each journey is going to be different. The important thing to remember when beginning your fitness journey is to stick with it through the tough times. Often workouts seem difficult in the beginning, but we all started as beginners. Surrounding yourself with a support group is a huge part of success. I am constantly looking to others to keep me motivated and challenged. Social media can be an amazing support system. I have so many friends I have met on Twitter that push me to succeed every day. The FitFluential community is an amazing source of support and healthy living tips as well.
What is one thing you will do this year to challenge yourself?
This year I plan to tackle my first triathlon. I am an experienced runner and was a swim instructor and lifeguard in college, but I have never been road biking. I plan to conquer my fear of cycling and sign up for my first
triathlon this September. This goal will be a challenge because I plan on revamping my entire training schedule and mastering three sports at once. I am looking forward to the challenge!
