Eat, sleep, work out, repeat.
All of these things make for a great day, and all of them are closely linked together. Your diet affects so many areas of your life, so it only makes sense that what you eat can make for a good – or a bad – night’s sleep.
Have you ever noticed how eating a certain meal might keep you awake at night, or cause for a fitful rest? It’s time to optimize your eating, and avoid the foods that keep you awake at night, instead focusing on the ones that will provide the best rest.
Of course, diet only plays one part. Having a good mattress is key, along with creating a sleep-friendly environment. That said, eating a healthy diet can be a huge help in getting a good night’s rest, so it’s important to avoid certain foods that can keep you awake!
3 Foods That Keep You Awake
High-Fat, Fried Foods
Before you indulge in those mozzarella sticks, think about how well you want to sleep tonight. Not only do fried foods affect the body in a negative way (as in, cause weight gain), they can also disrupt your sleep cycles. Researchers found that a fatty diet can cause people to feel more tired during the day as well as report sleep problems at night.
Tomatoes have plenty of healthy benefits, such as lycopene and other nutrients. However, they do have a somewhat acidic makeup, which can cause your body to work on digesting it rather than sleeping. Other acidic foods that can cause this reaction include citrus fruits, blueberries, and plums. These are healthy foods, of course, but are best eaten earlier in the day to avoid sleep disruption.
Cured Meats & Fermented Cheese
Bacon, sausage, pepperoni, Gorgonzola, and cheddar. What do these things all have in common? They taste great on pizza. Also, they contain tyramine. Tyramine is an amino acid found in aged, fermented and cured foods that can help regulate blood pressure. However, it also causes a release of noripinephrine, which is a hormone in the brain that stimulates your heartbeat and muscle contraction. We don’t need that when we’re trying to catch some Zzz’s, so skip the pizza before bed.
If you are eating these foods before bed, they can contribute to a tossing-turning kind of night, and no one likes those. Good sleep is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, so invest in it! You’ll never regret getting good night’s sleep, and it will only do your body good. For more tips on sleeping well and staying healthy, visit the Sleep Number blog!
