If the first thing that popped into your head when you read the title of this post was, “What?! Why?! What kind of crazy person would work out every day when they’re on vacation?!” I totally get it. But hear me out- I went on vacation and worked out every day, and I’m so glad I did. Here’s how and why I chose to and enjoyed working out on vacation.
Let’s start with why.
I’m a self-diagnosed gym rat. Between teaching kickboxing classes at my local gym and working out on my own, I’m in the gym sometimes twice a day. It’s a big part of my life and I love doing it! I have so much fun with my workouts, and I love pushing myself a little bit harder each time. I truly enjoy working out. And when I knew I was going to be on vacation for a week without my regular schedule (and with In-N-Out Burger), I decided to make it a point to get my sweat on every day. (Gratuitous food photo below).
Also, as a group fitness instructor, I’ve seen people leave for a week-long vacation, come back, and barely make it through the class session. Taking a week off from exercise might not seem like a long time, but combined with eating and drinking “vacation foods,” it can throw your body for a loop and make it really hard to get back into your normal routine. I knew that I didn’t want to hinder my progress by skipping my workouts for a week, and definitely did not want to return to my gym feeling like I was back at square one. Lastly, I recalled a quote (that I totally remembered incorrectly, but it motivated me so I’ll go with it) about how if you had one flat tire, you wouldn’t slash the other three. I took this as: well, I know I won’t be eating clean. I gotta have me some animal style fries (fellow In-N-Out lovers, you know what I mean). If I wasn’t going to be eating clean, I still wanted to keep my exercise routine in place. By the way, here’s the actual quote-
And here’s how.
“First Time Free” Classes
Many boutique gyms and fitness studios offer a free class to first-timers, and it’s an increidble way to check out unique workouts that may not be offered near you. As I was visiting near downtown LA, I was able to take advantage of some incredible studio workouts exclusive to the city, like Krav Maga Unyted and Speedplay.
I’m all the way across the country but that won’t stop me from finding something to punch and kick. Awesome class at @kravmagaunyted which left me sweaty and feeling awesome. Give Yourself a Walking Tour
One morning, I simply laced up my shoes and set out for a walk. 45 minutes later, I had power walked my way around, gotten some sunshine, and started my day with a little bit of sweat. It felt fantastic! And it’s literally the easiest way to workout anywhere. If you have feet, you can walk.
Um, the Internet.
If you’re one of the millions of people who have a smartphone, you have an endless arsenal of workouts available at your fingertips. And hello, the FitFluential app! Find workouts galore. Videos, step by step images, and more. And it’s free to download!
Hotels may not always have the best gyms, but they still have the basic equipment you need to get a good workout! The fitness room at my hotel had a treadmill, a bike, a stepper, and a universal Bowflex-type machine. Not exactly putting on the Ritz, but I still had an awesome workout! Sprints on the treadmill, plus a circuit with the universal machine.
There are plenty of excuses to skip your workout while on vacation. Sometimes, a week off can be just what you need! But if you want to keep workin on yo fitness while you enjoy a trip, it’s totally possible.
