Working out in the heat of summer means a little extra sweat… okay, a LOT of extra sweat. And while it’s extremely important to hydrate well no matter what time of year it is, it’s especially important in the summer. Warmer weather takes more moisture out of your body, so we need to replenish it!
Electrolytes balance the pH levels in your body, keeping everything in balance and acidity levels of your blood in check. They also affect the amount of water in your body, muscle function, and other important processes in your body. When we sweat, we lose electrolytes. So we need to get those back! And this drink is just the way to do it.
This DIY sports drink is healthy, hydrating, and refreshing. Coconut water is the base of the recipe, and for good reason- coconut water has more potassium and naturally occurring electrolytes than any other store-bought sports drinks, and it’s all natural. No artificial flavors or colors here, just pure, unadulterated coconut water.
The addition of the fruit juice provides a citrus punch. I used orange juice, but feel free to use lime (which is amazing with coconut water) or lemon. Pomegranate would also be amazing. Or pineapple! Oh, the possibilities.
So… salt. Why would we add salt to a drink that’s supposed to be hydrating?! This may come as a surprise, but salt is actually a key nutrient that the body needs for hydration. Sodium is a major electrolyte, but not just any sodium. Go for sea salt rather than iodized table salt, as the process used to make table salt strips the sodium of those necessary trace minerals.
Add some honey for sweetener, and you’ve got a healthy, hydrating and perfectly healthy sports drink that’s great during or after a workout, and fantastic for kids who are playing sports this season.
