In 2015, we’ve partnered with Kohl’s for the #MakeYourMove campaign. We want to know what your 2015 goals are and how you plan to #MakeYourMove toward a healthier you.
They say fitness is its own reward, and we don’t disagree. In the short term exercise releases feel-good endorphins for a natural high, and sleeping better and eating more healthily leads to increased energy and improved moods. Taking the long view, a healthier lifestyle makes for a healthier body and a longer life to spend in it.
Staying on track between short term immediate gratification and long term longevity can be tricky, though. Bodily changes come quickly when you first start a new fitness or eating routine; as your body adjusts those changes can come more slowly. Staying committed through these plateaus is vital for success— but an immense mental challenge. Rewarding yourself with a bit of a treat when you reach smaller fitness goals or weight loss milestones can help you stay motivated to keep going for the long haul, giving you something to work towards at all times as a way to reframe the mental game.
But for many of us, the word “treat” instantly conjures up sugary sweets or fast food calorie bombs. Those calories can add up and the last thing you want is to undo all your good work!
A favorite way to reward fitness and health endeavors is to purchase a new workout outfit or swimsuit to better fit your changing body. New sneakers, gear like an activity tracker or a heart rate monitor or even a four-legged running buddy serve double duty as rewards and motivation to keep moving.
If cooking isn’t your thing, take a few nights off and reward yourself with some meals delivered by a food prep service. Just keep it healthy!
Here are some more non-food ways to treat yourself for maintaining those healthy habits:
A sports massage after a particularly tough workout or a race is an excellent treat that helps you bounce back onto your feet. Then pamper those hardworking feet with a nice long relaxing soak and luxurious lotion, followed by a pedicure. We love the clean, fresh colors of Essie’s Back to Chic nail polish (3) collection.
Everybody could use a good luck charm that makes them look and feel good. This green chevron infinity scarf is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or all season long.
Dress up for a night on the town in an outfit that accentuates your healthy body— dab on a bit of Vera Wang’s Princess fragrance (5) to add a touch of royal sweetness.
An adventure away from home may be the ultimate reward to look forward to. It might be simple, like a weekend at the beach or a race in a different city, or more extravagant, like a romantic trip for two in a tropical locale. Either way, treating yourself to this Travelon wheeled underseat carry-on (6) along the way is sure to keep your motivation going.
Becoming healthier and more fit naturally pushes to you have more confidence. Stand tall and sexy in these gladiator heels (7) and you’ll take confidence to a whole new level.
As your strength and confidence grow, consider signing up for races or fitness classes that are still just a bit out of your comfort zone. You’ll have something to shoot for, enjoy the thrill of trying something new, and work your body in new ways that will help you to break through any physical plateaus.
