Moms are busy.
When the kids are young, simply trying to keep up with them is a full time job. As they grow older, there’s a never ending parade of homework, sports practices and extra-curriculars. You’re careful about making sure your kids eat well and often— show yourself the same care! When you go too long between meals, your blood sugar drops, affecting your mood, dulling mental alertness and leaving you without the energy you need to go about your day. And when the hunger finally catches up with you, you’re much more likely to overeat or make poor food choices.
Stay alert, energized and on top of your schedule by keeping snacks with you at all times: stashed in your purse or diaper bag, in your desk and car, in your gym bag. Aim to eat something every three hours or so, before you start to feel overly hungry. And be mindful of what’s in those snacks: snacking accounts for about a third of your daily calories. Make sure they’re not empty ones! Some quick and easily portable healthy snacks for when hunger strikes:
- nuts: almonds, cashews, walnuts
- seeds: pumpkin, sunflower, pomegranate
- fresh fruits and veggies
- dried fruits, kale chips
- Greek yogurt
- a spoonful of peanut butter
