You know that here at FitFluential we wholeheartedly believe that exercise is good for you (after all, even just five minutes of running a day will add years to your life, regardless of how fast you go)!
This month we’ve challenged you to take your fitness outside with the Fresh Air Challenge; as you savor the days of summer, you’ll reap the benefits of fresh air, Vitamin D endowing sunshine and therapeutic, mood enhancing green spaces.
Know what else is good for you? Getting good and dirty!
Here’s the dirt on dirt:
There may be such a thing as being too clean (the “hygiene hypothesis”). Exposure to dirt and the microbes within may help boost immunity and alleviate allergies.
A common bacteria that you find on skin has been shown be a stumbling block to inflammation. Scrubbing it away could actually slow down wound repair.
When you get actually get down in the dirt, another “good” bacteria (mycobacterium vaccae) has been linked to improved learning.
That friendly bacteria also acts like an antidepressant, triggering parts of your brain that produce serotonin. Train dirty, feel good!
Maybe most importantly, getting down and dirty can be a lot of fun— especially when you’re mucking around with friends.
So grab a few of your filthiest pals and sign up for the Dirty Dash! Combining fitness, friends and mud-slinging fun, the Dirty Dash is an untimed mud run obstacle course where
a military boot camp meets your inner five-year-old’s fantasy and subsequently converts boy to man and then man to swine.
You’ll need endurance to trudge up mountains of sludge, courage to overcome uncompromising obstacles, a complete lack of shame to wallow in pits of mud and a smile to show through at the end!
We feel it’s very important to also mention there is a a 175-foot slip n’ slide in the middle of the race.
You can play dirty for less by using the discount code “DDFIT” and saving 15% when you register online by September 5th. (Edited to add: great news! This discount has been extended until September 28th!) Remaining races for 2014 include:
