What’s better than fashionable fitness wear that is designed for comfortable, unrestricted movement? Fashionable fitness wear that supports social good and strives to achieve a low ecological impact.
prAna is an ancient Sankrit word for breath, life and vitality of the spirit: a concept infused with meaning for those who seek connection: body with mind, with the natural world, with community— on a local or global scale. This concept has also been a guiding force for prAna, an apparel company dedicated to providing products with purpose while adhering to sustainable, ethical business practices.
prAna began by specializing in clothing for yoga and rock climbing, but their comfortable yet hard-working apparel is also ideal for hiking, general fitness, traveling, outdoor play of any kind or just plain everyday living. Performance fabrics and sturdy construction mean prAna designs stand up to the demands of intense sweat sessions and repeat wear; an outdoorsy, world-inspired flair and soft feel mean you can kick back in style.
What really sets prAna apart from the fitness apparel crowd is its emphasis on ethics, sustainability and eco-consciousness; a holistic approach that touches all aspects of their company:
Good working conditions:
As an affiliate of the Fair Labor Association, prAna commits to the FLA Workplace Code of Conduct: rules and regulations that respect and safeguard the rights of workers, from labor laws to workplace safety, throughout their entire supply chain. The FLA promotes continuous improvement for global workers and holds their affiliated companies to the highest standards.
prAna is one of the founding brands to bring Fair Trade Certified apparel to market. Fair Trade Certified is the first social, economic and environmental standard that directly benefits the farmers who grow the cotton and the workers who sew the garments. It offers companies and consumers an unprecedented opportunity to positively impact the lives of these farmers and workers.
Many of prAna’s products are made from bluesign certified fabric , meaning they are compliant with bluesign standards. bluesign measures the safety, sustainability and environmental impact throughout the dyeing and finishing process. This means starting with clean materials and using a clean manufacturing process, for an end product that is safe for workers, the environment and their customers.
Natural Power Initiative:
prAna tracks ALL their energy use from their corporate headquarters, their retail stores to the homes of their employees, as well as 150 of their retailers; provides incentives and education to minimize that energy expenditure; and offsets their annual energy use through renewable energy certificates (RECs). REC purchases help fund renewable power sources such as wind farms, making these options more profitable, viable and hopefully economically accessible to all in the near future.
prAna is committed to improving the materials that go into their products. PrAna identified some materials as having a lower environmental footprint like Organic cotton, recycled polyester and hemp.
All of these factors, along with more eco-conscious efforts, won prAna the 2012 “Out of the Box” Award from the Global Sourcing Council, a non-profit focused on sustainable, socially responsible sourcing practices.
“The company is always looking for new ways to fold the intention of sustainability into their materials and practices, working to reduce the impact on soils, water supplies and other natural resources.”
In short, prAna is a line of activewear that makes you LOOK good and FEEL good, from the inside out. It supports your active lifestyle and fashion aesthetic while also supporting the environment, your health, and the global community.
Seriously, what’s not to LOVE?
