I was your typical American mom AND super morbidly obese. I weighed close to 400 pounds. I was very inactive despite having 3 young children. I put EVERYONE before myself. I didn’t think of my own needs, and I certainly didn’t think about the foods that I put in to my body.
After a big “a-ha” moment in October 2008, I began to take my life and my health seriously. And I began running.
Well, I didn’t start off running. I started off walking, then progressed to running and by April 2010 I decided to participate in a 5K race that was being hosted by my local Weight Watchers group. I had never run this distance without stopping, but that morning I decided to go for it. I told myself “just run to that light post, just run to that stop sign, just run to that bush” and before I knew it I was in the LEAD!! And I just kept running! And I WON!! I came in first place!
I couldn’t believe it and then I got bit by the running bug!! I love to run in local races! Since that first race I’ve participated in countless 5K’s, 10K’s, 15K’s and I’ve done one ½ marathon. My favorite distance is the 10K and most of the 5K’s I do now, I involve my three young children! We love to run together, it’s become a family affair.
And I don’t just run! Now I compete (and place!!) in triathlons, multi-sport endurance challenges (I did the Project Athena Keys Race to Recovery in November 2012…128.6 miles) and I do cross-training in the gym and I love Les Mills group fitness classes. I’ve also recently become a certified Spinning instructor. My life is TOTALLY different than it was 4 years ago!!
But this transformation didn’t come overnight. It took me 2 ½ years to lose 212 pounds and reach my goal weight of 157 pounds. And I had to have a mental shift, too. I had to learn that it’s okay to put myself first, that it’s okay to take some time for me. Because frankly, if I don’t take care of me, no one else will.
I lost a person, but I found myself. And I found what it means to be #FitFluential. And it’s amazing.
Do you have a fitness or health transformation story?
Whether it’s a weight loss journey, recovery from an injury or simply a change in mindset, we’d love to share it. You don’t need to be an Ambassador or even a blogger, just a member of the FitFluential community (you can sign up as an Enthusiast here).
Email your transformation narrative along with photos and a short bio to firstname.lastname@example.org for consideration.
