This week we have Kerri Olkjer of FitViews in the Spotlight!
1. How do you define FitFluential?
Using my passion for fitness and my social media influence, as it’s called, to positively affect others. One of my main goals is to encourage others along their fitness/healthy living journey. I share my experiences in the hopes of helping others that are where I was 6+ years ago (or wherever they are on their journey). I want everyone to find their “I can” as I have.
2. What is your main motivation to be fit?
I just plain love how fit feels. It. Feels. Awesome. I love how it makes me feel strong, vibrant, capable, and ready to tackle anything life brings my way. Having gone through most of my adult life NOT feeling that way is a big motivator for keeping at it.
3. FitFluential believes the key to balance is Eat, Sleep, Move, Enjoy. What is your favorite way to Enjoy Life?
Family time. I’m all about it. Whether it’s working around our little farm, playing tag with my boys, taking a road trip, or just watching a movie together. My family puts the joy in my enjoy.
4. What is your regular fitness routine?
This year I’m working very hard on workout consistency. It is something I’ve always struggled with. Lots of ups and downs, starts and stops. My workouts vary a lot, often depending on what I’m reviewing for my blog, but I am working on doing SOMETHING consistently 5 to 6 days a week. I try to balance my workouts with cardio, weights, and a little yoga.
5. What advice do you have for someone at the beginning of their fitness journey?
Oh boy! I could write a book here.
Most importantly: pay attention to your body and find what works for YOU. Looking back I’m amazed at how little I paid attention to myself and my body. Get to know your own body. Pay attention to how foods make you feel. Pay attention to how your body responds to different workouts. Pay attention to what works for you and don’t feel like you have to do what is popular. Even if you may not see it now, you are the expert in you.
Also: find your workout love. Trudging along hating your workout is the first thing to make you quit! Try all kinds of different things. Step out of your comfort zone a little, you never know what you’ll fall in love with. I’ve tried so many things and figured out that running makes me feel like superwoman. So I run. I also love at-home workout DVDs and lifting heavy. Those are my workout loves. Find yours and you’re leaps and bounds ahead of the game.
What advice do you have for other busy parents struggling with making time for working out and eating healthy?
Make it important.
It has to be a priority. We really do make time for what is important to us. You’re worth it and you deserve it, there’s no maybe here. But also, your family deserves it too. When you make it a priority to take care of you it makes for a better you to in turn give to everyone else. It’s kind of like the airplane spiel: put your own oxygen mask on first.
Make the time.
You really just have to make the time. It’s not always easy, but you have to find the time somewhere. Menu plan, cook together as a family instead of eating out, schedule your workout time like you would any important appointment. When you take care of yourself by making time for fitness and healthy living you will be healthier, stronger, more energetic, and just plain happier. You will be a better you to offer everyone in your life. It took me a long time to figure this out, but it really is true.
Your kids are watching.
They are. Always. Show them good things and they will follow. Take a family hike, play tag, plan your family vacations to be active. But also, take that you time to workout. Let them* see* this. You want them to grow up and feel OK about taking the same time to take care of themselves, right?
