When I was younger, I went through a rough patch in middle school. I was constantly teased about my weight, so I decided to do something about it. At first, I was healthy. I ate better foods and exercised. Then, it snowballed to barely eating and over exercising. It was a difficult few years, but I have AMAZING parents, friends, and family members that prayed for me. Nothing really clicked until my doctor told me that if I kept up my behaviors, I might not be able to have children later on in life. (I absolutely adore children, reason #1 why I love babysitting so much.) Well that doctor REALLY opened my eyes and something just clicked. I knew I had to get better.
I met with a personal trainer at the YMCA and she showed me some exercises that would help me build some muscle. But first, I had to make sure that I was eating enough to fuel my body in order to put on some muscle. I’m not going to lie and say it was easy, but eventually, I put on weight and got back up to a healthy weight.
Fast forward about 7 years.
Now, I absolutely LOVE strength training. My new motto is STRONG is the new skinny! This shift in my focus has actually HELPED me overcome those demons inside my head that try to bring me down. When I strength train, I have to make sure that I fuel my body properly. I don’t worry about starving myself to be skinny anymore. I want to eat healthy foods, especially protein that helps me stay STRONG!
My favorite muscle groups to workout are my abs and arms. I am a big fan of mixing things up. I like to take different fitness classes like Pilates, Yoga, Body Flow, and Sculpt. I also like getting new ideas from my favorite magazines: Shape, Self, Women’s Health, and Fitness.
Strength training is awesome!
